James Merritt | CEO, Partner

Jim attended Calvert Hall College H.S, and he graduated from John Carroll School with a Diploma of Distinction. Jim’s first year of college was spent at Frostburg State, where he majored in Computer Science. Jim decided to enroll in ROTC and follow in the military footsteps of his father, grandfather, and other family members. In December 1996, Jim joined the US Army Reserve and was stationed at Ft Meade, MD in a Military Intelligence Unit. While his ROTC status did not require it, Jim volunteered for Basic Combat Training and spent the summer at Ft Jackson, SC.

Upon returning from Basic Combat Training, Jim transferred to Towson University and moved back to Middle River to continue working in the family commercial fishing business. Over the next several years, Jim split his time between the family business, his US Army Reserve career, his ROTC duties at Loyola College, and night classes at Towson University. Mixed in with those responsibilities, Jim worked part-time in computer sales and repair at a local Best Buy.

Jim’s first full-time IT position was with Connected Resources. He was hired in 1999 to perform maintenance, repairs, and Year 2000 (Y2K) upgrade projects. While working on a Y2K project he was hired by Danfoss to perform a complete Windows NT to Windows 2000 Active Directory migration, as well as provide Helpdesk services to employees located throughout the United States.

In December 2001, Jim completed the Army ROTC program and graduated from Towson University with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems. Family medical reasons caused Jim to decline a commission as a US Army Active Duty 2nd Lieutenant; instead, he completed his time in the US Army Reserve, and received an honorable discharge. Leaving the US Army was one of Jim’s hardest decisions.

In 2003, NMR Consulting hired Jim to work as a helpdesk technician at the United States Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine (USACHPPM). After just a few months, Jim was promoted to helpdesk manager where he provided end user support for over 1100 systems. In December 2004, Jim moved to NMR Consulting’s Annapolis headquarters to help start a commercial services division.

With the experience gained at NMR Consulting, Jim joined SCD Information Technology in May 2005 as the Director and Senior Engineer for their Commercial Services Division. While with SCD Information Technology, Jim expanded their Commercial Service offerings by implementing monthly billing agreements and creating new partnerships with vendors, manufacturers, and other IT support companies. Finally, in 2010, Jim left SCD Information Technology to manage Bmore Technology full time.

In one way or another, Jim has worked to solve customers’ needs since his days at Best Buy. He has worked both directly with end users and on back end systems, and he knew the decisions he made would affect hundreds, if not thousands of users. In every scenario, Jim has focused on accomplishing the mission while ensuring that the people who use the systems are taken into consideration.

Jim possesses a strong entrepreneurial spirit. While working within his family’s businesses, Jim learned about hard work and customer service, and during his military service, he developed strong leadership abilities. Jim typically does not accept the status quo and searches for ways to move forward. Harkening back to his years growing up in the commercial fishing business, he believes that technology is a tool, a tool no different than radar on a boat, a mixer in the bakery, or a tank on the battlefield; technology is a tool to enhance and grow a business. Jim believes too many businesses look at technology as just another expense, rather than an investment on the path forward.
